Arizona Outdoors: The Colorado Plateau
The Colorado Plateau is a region of mesas, canyons, volcanic mountains, desert, lakes
and streams. Compared to the fault-blocked Basin & Range Provinces to the west and
south and the Rocky Mountains to the northeast, it is relatively stable from a geologic
perspective. Nevertheless, it is geologically active.
The Colorado Plateau is also home to a number of population centers, to include Native
American reservations. Enjoy the wonder of this majestic area.

An ancient Hopi village is built atop the
mesa. Although dusted with snow, it is
usually a fairly dry area. The Hopi people
have adapted to the climate and have lived
in this area for centuries.

What is the Colorado Plateau?

This site does not contain every Colorado Plateau village located in Arizona. At its completion, however, it
does hope to make access available to most. The Navajo and Hopi reservations contain a number of villages
that should be explored through the links to their tribal home pages.

The large mountain in the background is an extinct volcano. All the smaller hills between the volcano
and the camera are fairly recent volcanic cones. The newest is the cone in the left foreground. All
are part of the San Francisco volcanic field found in the vicinity of Flagstaff, Arizona.
