Arizona's Geologic Provinces
Basin & Range province is characterized by
numerous long, narrow block-fault mountains.
Between these mountain ranges are wide valleys
filled with the sediment eroded from the uplifted
ranges.
Transition Zone (or Central Mountains) is a
long band of rugged mountains found between
the Colorado Plateau and the Basin & Range.
Some of Arizona's oldest rocks are found in this
zone.
Colorado Plateau is a topographically high area
that is composed of mainly sedimentary rocks that
have undergone little deformation.  There are also
numerous volcanic flows to be found.
