Arizona Science Standards Grade 8, Strand 5, Concept 2, PO2: Identify the conditions under which an object will continue in its state of motion.
An object at rest will remain at rest
- or -
an object in motion will remain in motion
unless
acted upon by an outside force
Example: A book resting on a shelf will
remain on that shelf unless acted upon
by an outside force.  For example, a
tornado may come and move the shelf
or you may come along and remove
the book.
An object in deep space should continue
in a straight line at the same speed.
This force will change the "state of
motion" of the object.  If the object was
at rest, it will now be in motion with a
direction.  If it was already in motion,
either the direction or the velocity, or
both, could be changed.
